API with web search

Perplexity always searches before it answers

Perplexity is built on retrieval: there is no mode in which it answers from memory alone. We ask it through its API with web search on, six days a week, and because that API takes no location, it answers the same wherever your buyers are.

The longest source lists.
Perplexity cites more pages per answer than any other engine we track, so it shows most clearly whether your pages are being found at all.
No market setting.
Unlike ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's two surfaces, Perplexity's answers do not change with the market your workspace measures.
Six days a week.
The same prompts on a fixed schedule, so a change in its sources is a change in Perplexity, not in what we asked.

Track Perplexity sources

The sites Perplexity reads before it names anyone

Perplexity searches before every answer and lists the pages it used, so its sources are the most direct record you will get of where an assistant forms its view of your category. The Sources screen ranks every site the engines read for your prompts over the last seven days, and lists the engines that read each one. The sites that recommend a competitor and never you are where to get listed first.

Which engines read it.
Every site carries the engines that cited it, so the pages Perplexity relies on are a column, not a guess.
Read, and how often it named you.
How many answers cited the site, and how many of those same answers named your brand.
Sites to get listed on.
Sites read for your prompts that named a competitor every time and you never are flagged at the top, with the engines that read them.

Cited, not named

Perplexity citation tracking: your page read, a rival named

Because Perplexity cites so heavily, it is where cited but not named shows most clearly: your page sits in its sources while the answer recommends someone else. When that keeps happening, the page is already being found, so getting recommended comes down to how it frames you.

Your pages, marked.
Every source from your own site is flagged, so an answer that read you and named a rival stands out.
Who it named instead.
The brands in the order Perplexity named them, with how often each one came up.
The sentence that did it.
The answer word for word, so you can see what the named brands were recommended for.

Sources and mentions

Brand mentions in Perplexity, kept apart from its sources

Because Perplexity always searches, every answer it gives has a source list to check you against. We record the two separately: a brand name inside a cited URL is not a mention, so being in its sources never counts as being in its answer. Each pairing calls for a different fix.

In its sourcesNamed

Read and named

Your page was in its sources and your brand was in its answer. The page is doing its job.

Watch your position: the answer view stores where you came among the brands it named.

The Answers screen saysnamed you

In its sourcesNot named

Read, not named

Perplexity used your page and recommended someone else from it. It found you; it did not choose you.

A framing problem. The alert email names the page it read, the prompt, and who it named instead.

The Answers screen sayscited, not named

Not in its sourcesNamed

Named from someone else's page

Your brand is in the answer, but none of your pages were in its sources. Another site made your case.

The answer's citations show whose pages those were. Keep what they say about you current.

The Answers screen saysnamed you

Not in its sourcesNot named

Neither read nor named

Perplexity answered from other people's pages and named the brands it found there. You were not in the running.

A retrieval problem. Start with the sites to get listed on, which it reads and you are missing from.

The Answers screen saysnot named

More on the read-but-not-named square: why AI cites you without naming you.

Per-engine visibility

Perplexity tracking, your clearest read on retrieval

Perplexity's rate sits on its own card beside the other five, with the count behind it. Because it shows retrieval more directly than any other engine, a gap between Perplexity and the rest often tells you whether your problem is being found or being chosen, and an average would erase exactly that gap.

Perplexity's source lists are too long to check by hand

Searching your category in Perplexity yourself tells you what one run said and which dozen pages it used. Tracking it is about everything that one run cannot tell you.

What checking Perplexity by hand and tracking it with RankHound each tell you
Which sites it readBy hand:Open each link in the source list, one answer at a time.Tracked:Every cited site stored with the answer, your own pages marked.
Whether it read you and named a rivalBy hand:Scan every domain in the list and hope you spot your own.Tracked:The answer is flagged cited, not named, and the alert email names the page.
Which sites keep coming upBy hand:A spreadsheet you keep yourself, if you keep one.Tracked:The Sources screen ranks every site across your answers, with the engines that read it.
Whether it names youBy hand:One search, one draw. The next search can differ.Tracked:Your prompts six days a week, reported as named in so many of so many answers.
When something changesBy hand:The next time you think to look.Tracked:An alert when a competitor is named more often than you, or a page of yours is read and a rival named.

Below five answers a result is shown as a fraction, never a percentage, because one Perplexity run is a draw rather than a rate. The rest of the rules are in our methodology.

How do I get recommended by Perplexity?
Start with the answers that read your page and recommended someone else, then the sites Perplexity reads that named a competitor and never you. The first are about how your pages frame you; the second are the places to get onto. Perplexity is asked again six days a week, so its own rate shows whether a change moved its answers.
Can RankHound track what Perplexity says about my brand?
Yes. Perplexity is asked your prompts six days a week, and every answer is kept with the brands it named and its full list of sources, which is usually the longest of any engine's. Collected through the API with web search enabled.
Why does Perplexity cite my page but name a competitor?
Because it found your page and preferred how another page framed the answer. Perplexity cites so heavily that this shows up here first. If your page is in its sources on many answers and your brand is named in none of them, the work is in how the page frames you.
What makes Perplexity worth tracking on its own?
Because it cites so heavily, Perplexity is where cited but not named shows up most clearly. If your page is in the citation list on twenty answers and your brand is named in none of them, Perplexity is finding you and recommending someone else, so the work to get recommended is in how your pages frame you.
Why do Perplexity's sources change between runs?
Perplexity searches afresh every time, so the pages it retrieves change, and with them the wording, the brand order and the long list of citations. We report the share of its answers that named you with the count behind it, and a fraction rather than a percentage until there are five.
Does Perplexity give different answers in different countries?
Not in our measurement. Perplexity is asked through an API that has no location field, so a UK workspace and a US workspace see the same Perplexity answers. The market setting moves ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's two surfaces only.
Why isn't Perplexity averaged with the other engines?
Because the average would describe no engine at all. Perplexity cites far more sources per answer than Claude and runs three times as often, so a blend of the two hides exactly the contrast that tells you whether you are being found or being chosen.
How do I track mentions of my brand in Perplexity?
Add your brand, its domain, your competitors and the prompts your buyers ask. Perplexity is then asked each prompt six days a week, and every answer is stored with the brands it named, in the order it named them, and every site it cited. Perplexity gets its own rate on the Overview with the count behind it, and each prompt's History lists every answer newest first, so you can see a mention arrive or disappear.
Can I see which sources Perplexity cites for my prompts?
Yes. Each answer keeps its full source list with your own pages marked, and the Sources screen ranks every site the engines read for your prompts over the last seven days, with how many of those answers named you and which engines read each site. Sites that Perplexity read and that named a competitor every time without naming you are flagged as sites to get listed on.
