The fix, not the score
How to get cited by AI and recommended by ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI
The engines already told you which pages they read. The ones that get cited again and again, recommend a competitor every time, and have never named you, are a to-do list with names on it. Get onto them, and re-check to see whether it worked.

Why most advice on getting cited by AI cannot be tested
Write better content. Build authority. Earn mentions. All of it is probably true and none of it tells you what to do on Monday, because none of it names a page.
There is a shortcut that most of the advice skips: when an assistant answers a question about your category, it says where it looked. The sources are in the answer. Collect enough answers and the set of pages the engines keep returning to stops being a guess and becomes a list you can count.
The usual advice
- Write better contentNames no page
- Build authorityNames no page
- Earn mentionsNames no page
What the answers already tell you
- The page the engine read
- How many answers read it
- Which competitors it named
- Whether it has ever named you

zapier.com was read fifteen times across five engines while assistants answered questions about our category. Sixteen of those twenty citations were one page, “The 10 best social media management tools in 2026”. It named six of our competitors and has never named us. That is not a ranking problem, and no amount of writing on our own site changes it. It is one listicle, and we are not in it.
Why the raw number is bigger than the useful one
The product reports 71 for us over seven days and 92 over thirty. The table is the top of that list with one subtraction, and we would rather show you the subtraction than a clean list you would catch us filtering, because anyone who opens the product sees the raw one.
Taken out
Platforms with no editor to contact
User-generated content and jobs sites. The engines genuinely read them and they genuinely name competitors, but there is nobody to pitch, so they are not work a reader can do. This is the only reason anything is held back from the list.
- linkedin.com
- reddit.com
- indeed.com
Kept, on purpose
Competitors’ own roundups
Of the 16, 9are competitors’ own blogs running comparison posts. The product leaves out the sites of the competitors you track and nobody else’s, so every other rival’s roundup stays on the list, and it should: a place in a competitor’s alternatives post is ordinary outreach, and one of the most valuable placements in any category.
- socialpilot.co
- sintra.ai
- oneupapp.io
- postplanner.com
- beplan.io
- socialchamp.com
- dashsocial.com
- napoleoncat.com
- loomly.com
And the number moves, which is the point. Our demo video says 59, and it was right on 1 October 2026. Twelve more sites qualified within a day. A count without its window and its date is not a fact, which is why both appear beside every figure here and in the product.
The work
How to get cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Google with this list
The list arrives sorted. What turns it into placements is reading each page the way the engine did, then asking why you are not on it.
- Start with frequency, not authority.
- A site cited in twenty answers about your category beats a famous one cited in none, and the list is already sorted that way.
- Read the page before you pitch it.
- Most are roundups, comparisons and integration directories. The question is why you are not in the list, not whether you could write a guest post.
- Check whether you are already on it and unnamed.
- If you are, it is a framing problem on that page, not a coverage one, and fixing the paragraph beats publishing ten posts. When the page is your own, the finding arrives by email.
- Skip the competitors you track.
- Their own sites naming themselves are not a gap, and the computation drops them. A rival you do not track writing a comparison post is a roundup like any other.
- Re-check after the work lands.
- The engines have to read the page again before anything moves, which takes weeks rather than days. The scheduled runs keep asking, so you can see whether it worked, and until there are enough answers the honest reading is too early to say.
RankHound
Google AI Overview read contoso.com/blog/fabrikam-alternatives and recommended someone else
Findings for Contoso over the last 7 days. Every number below comes with the answers behind it.
- Google AI Overview cited https://contoso.com/blog/fabrikam-alternatives when asked "Fabrikam alternatives for a remote team" and named Fabrikam, Northwind, Tailspin instead (2 times)
- Claude cited https://contoso.com/blog/fabrikam-alternatives when asked "Fabrikam alternatives for a remote team" and named Fabrikam, Litware, Northwind, Tailspin instead
This happened in 3 of the 109 answers we collected for you over the last 7 days.
The models are reading you and recommending a competitor from what they read. That is a framing problem rather than a coverage one, so more content on the same topics will not fix it. Open one and check whether it positions you among the alternatives it lists, or merely lists them.
See what to do nextHow this is computed
From stored answers, not from a crawl. Every answer we collect keeps its citation list, so a gap is a domain that appears in those citations at least twice in the window, appears alongside a competitor being named, and has never appeared alongside your own brand being named. Sites a competitor owns are excluded.
It is the Sources screen in the app, on every plan, and the same figures come back from the API as answers_citing_you_without_naming_you. If you would rather read the raw evidence, we wrote up what cited-but-not-named means and why it needs the opposite work to being absent.
A site makes the list when
- It was cited in two or more answers in the window.
- None of those answers named you.
- At least one of them named a competitor you track.
- It is not your own site.
- It is not the site of a competitor you track.
